Maserati A6GCS/53 Spyder Re-Creation

This Maserati A6GCS/53 re-creation is said to have been constructed using the chassis of a damaged Maserati 3500 GT and aluminum coachwork fabricated in the style of a Fantuzzi-bodied spyder by Victor Yordy of The Metal Works in Dewart, Pennsylvania, in the mid-2000s. The project was completed by Mastercraft Bodyworks in Red Oak, Texas, in the late 2000s, at which time the 3500 GT-sourced DOHC inline-six was overhauled. The car then spent time in the Gene Ponder collection in Texas and received a repaint in red in 2021 prior to being purchased by the selling dealer in August 2023. Additional features include triple Weber carburetors, twin-plug ignition, a ZF five-speed manual transmission, Strange Engineering four-wheel slotted disc brakes, adjustable coilover suspension, 16” Borrani wire wheels, Brooklands windscreens behind a full-width windshield, buckets seats upholstered in tan leather, and Jaeger instrumentation with blue dial faces. This A6GCS re-creation is now offered by the selling dealer in Brownsburg, Indiana, with photos from its construction, invoices dating back to 2007, and a clean Montana title describing the car as a 1964 Maserati A6GCS.

The A6GCS 2.0-liter sports racer was introduced in 1947 and was redesigned for competition in the World Sportscar Championship in 1953 under the leadership of Maserati chief engineer Gioacchino Colombo. The A6GCS/53 was based on a widened version of the A6GCM single-seater chassis and was powered by an oversquare, twin-plug development of the A6CGS’s 2.0-liter engine, while enveloped bodywork was adopted in lieu of its predecessor’s cycle fenders. Just 52 examples of the original A6CGS/53 were built, most of which wore spyder coachwork courtesy of Carrozzeria Fantuzzi.

This re-creation’s aluminum Fantuzzi-style body is said to have been fabricated by The Metal Works in Pennsylvania and was further shaped and refined along with its tubular substructure during completion of the project by Mastercraft Bodyworks in Texas. The body was stripped to bare metal and refinished in red after repairs to areas of corrosion during a refresh by Foster Vintage in Northlake, Texas, in 2021. Features include Brooklands-style windscreens behind a full-width windshield, drilled door handles, removable hood and trunk panels, a Monza-style fuel filler, and side-pipe exhaust.

Silver-painted Borrani wire wheels are secured by two-eared knock-offs and are wrapped in 6.50-16 Dunlop Racing tires. Stopping is handled by Strange Engineering slotted disc brakes with dual master cylinders, a Wilwood proportioning valve, and stainless-steel braided hoses.

The cockpit houses a pair of bucket seats trimmed in tan leather with color-matched upholstery over the side panels and inner doors. Additional features include tan square-weave carpeting, red lap belts, an offset shifter with an aluminum knob, footwell pockets, a dash-mounted rearview mirror, and an electrical cut-off switch.

The wood-rimmed steering wheel sits ahead of a silver-painted dash panel that hosts blue-faced Jaeger instrumentation including an 8,500-rpm tachometer and gauges monitoring coolant temperature and oil pressure. A fuel-level gauge, an Excelsior Park stopwatch, and a St. Christopher medal are situated to the driver’s right, while Auto Meter gauges monitoring coolant temperature and oil pressure were added under the dash in 2023. The car is not equipped with an odometer, and total mileage is unknown.

The DOHC inline-six is said to have been sourced from a 3500 GT and was overhauled by Norwood Autocraft in Rockwall, Texas, in 2008. Induction is through triple Weber 40 DCOE carburetors, while ignition is handled by two spark plugs per cylinder. Service in 2023 included an oil change and the replacement of the water pump, fuel pump, spark plugs, coolant hoses, and thermostat.

Power is sent to the rear wheels via a ZF five-speed manual transmission, and the fluids for the transmission and differential were changed in 2023. Suspension incorporates a double-wishbone front setup and a solid rear axle with radius rods, while adjustable coilover shock absorbers are utilized all around.

Images of the car during its construction are included in the photo gallery below, as are invoices for work and parts dating back to 2007.

Chassis number 1012496 is stamped on a tag secured in the engine bay and is listed as the identification number on the title.
