This 1964 Sunbeam Tiger was acquired by the seller’s father in the 1980s and was refurbished in red before it was sold in the 1990s and subsequently purchased by the seller in 2018. Power is provided by a 260ci V8 paired with a four-speed manual transmission. Features include a black soft top, black vinyl upholstery, a roll bar, power-assisted front disc brakes, a telescoping steering column, and 13” alloy wheels. Work completed under current ownership included the replacement of the clutch and clutch hydraulics, a transmission rebuild, brake and cooling system refurbishment, and replacement of the ignition components, the carburetor, and the tires. This Mk 1 Tiger is now offered with a body-color removable hardtop, new and used spare parts, repair manuals, a Sunbeam Tiger Owner’s Association (STOA) Certificate of Authenticity, repair invoices, and a clean Pennsylvania title in the seller’s name listing the car as a 1965 Rootes.
The body was finished from the factory in Moonstone (19) and was refurbished in red in the 1980s during the seller’s father’s ownership. At that time, rust repairs were completed on the floor pans, and fiberglass reinforcement material was installed. The seller notes that replacement front lower fender panels were installed in 2021. Tears are visible in the soft top above the side windows and rust is shown on the rocker panels. Paint blemishes around the car are pictured in the gallery below.
Alloy 13” wheels with black recesses and polished faces were refurbished in 2018 and mounted with 205/60 BFGoodrich Radial T/A tires at that time. Brake work performed under current ownership included the installation of a Lockheed-style brake servo as well as replacement of the master cylinder, the front calipers and rotors, the rear wheel cylinders, the emergency brake cable, and the hard and soft brake lines. The factory servo is included in the sale.
The interior features bucket seats trimmed in black vinyl accompanied by a matching dash pad, door panel inserts, and carpeting. Features include a Hurst shifter, a telescoping steering column, a center arm rest with storage, and a passenger-side glove compartment. The heater is currently bypassed, the wood-grain dash fascia is cracked and delaminating, portions of the carpet are missing, the seat foam bottoms are deteriorating, and the rubber diaphragm under the driver seat is torn. A replacement foam bottom cushion and diaphragm are included in the sale.
A banjo-style steering wheel with an aftermarket vinyl wrap fronts a 140-mph speedometer, a tachometer, an ammeter, and gauges for oil pressure, coolant temperature, and fuel level. The gauges function intermittently, and the turn signals do not self-cancel. The seller notes that the speedometer stopped functioning in 2019. The five-digit mechanical odometer shows 74k miles and total mileage is unknown.
The 260ci V8 was reportedly rebuilt in the 1980s and is said to feature a performance camshaft and valve springs along with ported cylinder heads. Replacement LAT aluminum valve covers, an aftermarket chrome air cleaner housing, and exhaust headers are shown, and the seller notes that a replacement Holley four-barrel carburetor was installed under current ownership. Additional service completed under current ownership included re-coring the radiator and rebuilding the generator as well as replacement of the water pump and water pump housing, the thermostat and thermostat housing, cooling system hoses, the spark plugs and ignition components, and the fuel pump and fuel lines. Engine and driveline date stamps and codes are presented in the gallery.
Power is sent to the rear wheels through a rebuilt Toploader four-speed manual transmission with a Hurst shifter. The clutch and the clutch hydraulics were replaced under current ownership. Additional photos of the underside are viewable in the gallery.
The Sunbeam Tiger Owners Association Certificate of Authenticity from April 2021 indicates the factory paint color, engine number, and other information.
The cowl identification tag was removed from the car at the time of the repaint, and shows a VIN of B9470429 LXRFE. The Pennsylvania title shows a VIN of B9470429 and lists the car as a 1965 Rootes.
