KEY FACTS
- This 1962 Bristol 407 is a handsome example of the landmark V8-powered classic British saloon, which is finished in a suitably period-correct colour combination.
- It is powered by a Chrysler 5.1-litre V8, with Bristol cams and tappets, which develops around 250hp and sends it to the rear wheels via a three-speed automatic transmission.
- The five-digit odometer shows 42,524 miles; however this is not warranted.
- This fine example has been with its seventh and current custodian for the last seven years.
EQUIPMENT AND FEATURES
- The Bristol 407 was the first model to be produced by the company after its separation from the Bristol Aeroplane Company which built all previous Bristol cars. It outwardly resembled its predecessor, the 406, with the only distinguishing features being a horizontal bar on the slightly enlarged radiator grille, and two rear exhaust pipes.
- Crucially however, given the car’s significant power increase, was the switch from leaf springs at the front to independent coil springs for improved handling characteristics.
- This example is finished in a handsome shade of burgundy replacing the original grey paintwork, over a grey leather-trimmed interior accented by dark wood inlays on the upper dashboard.
- It rides on a set of 16-inch steel wheels with polished centre caps, shod in radial Avon TurboSteel tyres.
- The car has been fitted with a power steering system and a modern but classic-style radio, and has been repainted in a non-original colour.
- It will be accompanied by an original handbook and a selection of maintenance invoices.
- It is one of only three Bristol 407s known to have been fitted with power steering by renowned Bristol specialist, SLJ Hackett – giving it far greater ease of use if the intention is to drive the car regularly.
CONDITION
- The seller is not aware of any bodywork damage.
- The resprayed burgundy paintwork is described by the seller as being in good overall condition, though there are various light scratches around the car, as well as a blister on the bonnet and some minor bubbling on one of the wheel arches and on the passenger door, above the lower trim strip.
- Moving inside, the cabin is in very good order, and is believed to be original. It presents with some creasing on the grey leather upholstery but with no particular signs of wear, cracking or discolouration. The dials are in good order, and the wood trims are very smart. Elsewhere, the driver touchpoints feature a handsome ‘patina’ of age and careful usage.
- The seller is not aware of any electrical or mechanical faults, and they state that there are no warning lights showing on the dashboard.
- While it is exempt from mandatory testing due to its age, the car’s last MOT test was conducted on 27 September 2022 at an indicated 42,514 miles, resulting in a first-time pass with one advisory to monitor free play in the offside front steering box.
SERVICE HISTORY
- This 407’s most recent routine maintenance was carried out in August 2021 at an indicated 42,423 miles by Perranwell Garage. The work comprised of an engine and filter change, a transmission fluid flush, and replacement of the washer pump, spark plugs, and pan gasket.
- Prior to this, the car was kept in storage at S.L.J. Hackett from March 2018 until August 2020, and was serviced in November 2019, which was a winter health-check including a check of the batteries and starter motor, replacement of the antifreeze and rear axle oil, and a routine engine oil and filter change.
