THE STORY

Since its introduction in 1949, the new Oldsmobile Rocket OHV V-8 became the choice for racers and Hot Rodders everywhere. It may be claimed that the first rock ‘n’ roll song ever published was “Rocket 88” by Jackie Brentson and his Delta Cats, and this hit song contributed to the popular interest in the new Oldsmobiles. By 1956, the engine was still called the Oldsmobile Rocket, but the car evolved into this restored 98-Series Oldsmobile Starfire Convertible from the Clyde Horst Collection. This Starfire Convertible is one of 8,581 built and rides on a 126-inch wheelbase chassis supported by 15-inch steel wheels mounted with 8.00-15 whitewall tires and full chrome wheel discs with triple spinners. This chassis includes power steering and power brakes. The engine is a 324 CI OHV V-8, which produces 240 HP at 4,400 RPM with a Rochester Quadro-Jet carburetor and dual exhaust. Transmission duties are accomplished by an Oldsmobile Jetaway automatic.

The body of this Starfire is finished in a two-tone combination of Rose Mist and Antique White separated by long bright horizontal arrowhead moldings on the sides of the body. A snug white convertible top protects the interior from the elements. A large distinctive oval grille opening with a split in the center and horizontal bars graces the front of the car. The interior is trimmed in two-tone black and white vinyl with black carpet. The controls consist of power windows, power seat and Autronic Eye headlight control. The odometer reads 50,235 miles. A body-off restoration was completed in 1987. The car has been stored in a climate controlled facility under the care of Clyde Horst for 37 years, receiving a full detailing twice a year since restoration. This car received its AACA First Junior, Senior and Bomgardner Award in 1987. It also received an AACA National First in 1989 and an AACA Grand National Senior in 2010. It is an eight-time AACA Preservation Award winner, and it garnered a First Place Oldsmobile Grand National win in 1987. The car’s last show appearance was at the 2018 AACA meet at Hershey, Pennsylvania. The new owner of this Oldsmobile will know that he or she has the absolute best and will be proud to show it or drive it anywhere.
